Notes from Mrs. Jackson

It was a great and busy week at NSS. The children are enjoying all the great learning activities in their grade levels. This year, all elementary schools have increased the number of minutes for students to engage in non-instructional activities. At NSS we have continued our practice of 20 minutes of recess before lunch and each teacher plans an additional 10 minutes of “activity” time daily that can include outside recess or a movement activity (i.e. Responsive Classroom Game) within the classroom. The children are already benefiting from the additional 10 minutes of movement time within the school day. Make sure you read through all the information in the Flash as there are many great activities coming up.

NSS Open House Schedule

We are looking forward to seeing you at next week’s Open House on Thursday. This is a great opportunity for parents to meet teachers and hear about all the fine activities in place. This is also a time to visit with PTA members and catch up with friends. Please keep in mind this event is for adults only as there is no supervision in place for children. Hope to see you there!

School Volunteers

All school volunteers and anyone spending time with our students in school (i.e. before and after school program providers, parent readers, birthday lunch visitors etc…) must have an updated 2016-17 Volunteer/Resource form on file with the main office. Please click on the link or copy and paste it into your browser, complete this form and return a hard copy to your child’s classroom teacher.  http://archive.fairfieldschools.org/downloads/Volunteer%20Form.pdf

Lice Screening for All Grades

Our PTA have, once again, provided support for a comprehensive head lice check of all students. This year it will be done by the The Hair Fairies, a private based provider. This will include an in-school examination of all students on Wednesday, September 14th.

This has been a well-received program here at NSS, HOWEVER, if you do NOT want your child to participate, please send in a written note to Mrs. Jackson prior to the screening date. This program will be most successful in preventing lice if we have 100% support from all families. We appreciate working together to help all of our children with this. Feel free to check out their website www.hairfairies.com  for more information. A few important facts about Head lice:

* Head lice are more a nuisance than a health problem. Head lice do not cause disease.

* Having head lice is very common and is not connected to personal hygiene or cleanliness.

* Head lice are passed from person to person by close contact with someone who already has head lice, contaminated clothing, and other belongings (such as combs, brushes, towels, barrettes, bedding).

* Lice can crawl but do not jump or fly

* Only those infested with active head lice should be treated with a head lice medication called a pediculicide.

The symptoms of head lice are:

* Itching on the scalp or neck caused by an allergic reaction to the bites.

* Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair.

* Nits (lice eggs) attached to the hair or presence of lice in the hair or on the scalp.

* Sores on the head caused by scratching. These sores can sometimes become infected.

* To prevent head lice remind your child not to share combs, brushes, hats and similar items with others.

Library Volunteer Meeting

We love to have library volunteers during the year. Last year our library circulated between 3500-4000 books every month! So there it a lot to do, like checking out books, shelving books, helping with special projects, assisting students, etc. We are having an informational meeting on Tuesday, September 13 at 10:30am. If you cannot attend, but would like to volunteer, please email our Library Volunteer Coordinator, Gillian Sizer at gilliansizer@gmail.com

NSS Summer Fun Photos

If you took a photo of an NSS student with an NSS poster/shirt while traveling or having fun this summer, send them in. We will be making our bulletin board next week.

Calling All Kindergarten Girls

If anyone is interested in joining a Daisy Troop let Tracy Palmer (tracytodaro@yahoo.com) or Mary Ann Petrone (maryannpetrone@optonline.net) know ASAP. A bunch of girls have expressed interest, but we need leader volunteers ASAP! Please reach out if you can volunteer to lead. Our troop only meets once a month and the training is very easy. It is so much fun, and you will have lots of help from all the other leaders at school; NSS really has a wonderful scout program! Join us! A huge thanks to Mary Ann Petrone for volunteering as the first leader, but we need more! Please contact us today to volunteer. Thank you!

Friday Flash Info

If you have a submission for the Friday Flash, send it to info@nsspta.org no later than 11:00 AM on Thursday.  Please include any attachments as well. When we have a short week, the Flash will go out on the last school day of that week. The deadline for submissions will then be 11:00 AM on the previous day. Also, when sending an email for the Flash, please include no extra formatting, i.e., bold, caps, shading, etc.  For any “community” or non-PTA flyers, please utilize the district’s new system – Peachjar.
