Notes from Mrs. Jackson
Another great week at NSS filled with many wonderful activities. Dr. Jones is visiting NSS on Monday afternoon and I am looking forward to having her on site to see all the great learning that is taking place throughout the building. We are all looking forward to the October 31st Halloween Parade and more information will be sent home regarding this. For now please keep in mind that this is a special event at school – children have the opportunity of wearing costumes (we ask for no clowns or scary ones) and parents come outside to watch us all march around the bus circle together as a school family. So please mark this on your calendars.

NSS Storybook Pumpkin Patch
Help us start a new fall tradition at NSS!  We are growing a storybook pumpkin patch in our library and need your help!
Decorate a pumpkin to look like your favorite book character!
  • Start with a pumpkin NO larger than a basketball.
  • NO CARVED or CUT pumpkins. Decorate without carving, cutting or poking holes. Acrylic paints or permanent markers work best. Watercolors run and spray paint will dissolve the pumpkin. Add materials like yarn, buttons, wiggly eyes, construction paper, etc.
  • Complete the page that was sent home.
  • Bring your pumpkin and the page to the school library starting Monday, October 9. Pumpkins going on the bus should be carried in a bag.
  • Take your pumpkin home on Wednesday, October 31. Any pumpkins left behind will be thrown away by 4 pm.
  • Participation is voluntary. This is not a contest.  Each decorated pumpkin will earn a sticker.
Have fun and be creative!

A Big Thank You to…
Kelly Takacs for organizing another fun Walk to School Day. What a beautiful day and a big turnout!
All the parents who have volunteered to take on the task of Room Parent.
Lee Siegel and Janice Massey for organizing another high-quality session of After School Enrichment classes.

Halloween Bash & Monster Mash
Calling all witches, goblins, fairies, and superheroes, too.
We’ve got a spooktacular party planned just for you!

The 2017 Halloween Party will be held on October 21st with a spooky session from 5:00 – 6:30pm and a scary session following from 7:15 – 8:45pm.  This year’s party will feature a dance with a DJ as well as games, crafts, and a haunted house.  It’s a fantastic night and one of the biggest events of the NSS school year.  Click here for ticket forms.

*****In order to make this night a success, we need fun parents like YOU! Are you cool and crafty? An ace with temporary tattoos? Not afraid of a little slime? Please click on the link below to sign up to help out.  This night is not possible without the help of parent volunteers, and getting involved makes the evening more fun for everyone.  So gather the ghouls, round up some goblins and join the NSS Boo Crew!  No official Halloween training necessary!*****

Book Fair Coming Up!
NSS annual Book Fair is coming up at the end of October, and we need volunteers! This is a great way to spend time in the school and see your kids picking out the books they love (and revisiting some of your old favorites yourself). We need volunteers to help with setting up on Monday, October 23rd, as well as volunteer at the fair on Tuesday, Oct. 24, Wednesday, Oct. 25, and Thursday, Oct. 26 during school hours. We also need volunteers to help during school conferences on Wednesday and Thursday. More details can be found by following the sign-up link.

Any questions, email Hallie Levine at or Jodie Ortega at

Kindness Coat Drive
The NSS Kindness Committee is partnering with the National Charity League of Fairfield to conduct a winter coat drive benefitting the Bridgeport Rescue Mission’s Thanksgiving project.  Gently used coats of ALL sizes can be dropped off in the designated box in the school lobby from 10/11-11/1.  Please consider donating to this worthy cause!

On October 13th, NSS will have a DRESS IN PINK DAY to support Breast Care awareness month. Each student can donate $1 and faculty members can donate $5. If writing a check, please make it payable to the Norma Pfriem Breast Care Center. The money collected will be donated to the NPBC which helps to support local women who are currently being treated for breast cancer, mentally & physically regardless of their ability to pay.

Please send your donations in an envelope marked “PINK PLEDGE” to Eileen Dancho c/o Cormac Dancho, 4M.

We will pick one student from each class with the WACKIEST & TACKIEST pink outfit to take a picture with the NPBC pink car with eyelashes.

Together NSS can make a difference…. Let’s pink it up, North Stratfield!

K-Cup Drive to Support Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital
“Care Cup” Drive- October 2nd- 31st : Care Cups (K-cups) are needed for distribution at the family lounge in Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. A Keurig machine is available to the families, but K-cups are not supplied by the hospital. In collaboration with Brady’s Smile, the second grade NSS Girl Scouts would like to supply K-cups for the month of November to the family lounge at the Children’s Hospital.
A collection box will be outside the main office for donations. All flavors of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are welcome. Thank you for your support!

Socks of Love Collection
Please help Pack 95’s Arrow of Light Scouts fulfill their Duty to God in Action requirement. They will be putting together Socks of Love for the Bridgeport Rescue Mission’s men’s shelter. The scouts are looking for the following items: Tube socks (new), shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush and toothpaste, bars of soap, deodorant, etc. Our Socks of Love drive will run September 25th – October 13th. Please leave your donations in the box in the front hall of the school.
