SCHOOL NEWS

Notes from Mrs. Jackson

It was a fine week at NSS following a long holiday weekend.  Although the weather has been warmer than usual at this time of year – this is a good time to remember to send your children to school prepared for chilly temperatures at recess. Hats, gloves, and warm coats are essential for outdoor play on days when the temperature drops. This is also a good time to remember the importance of monitoring technology in the hands of your children. It is difficult for all of us to keep up with the many devices children have access to (i.e. cell phones; iPads). We can’t stress enough how important it is for you to monitor your child’s use of this type of technology at home – group chats and instant messaging is beginning to have an impact on the bus and in the classroom, as children come to school upset by some of the content being shared peer to peer.  Stay tuned for more information as we keep an eye on this together.

PTA NEWS

Reflections

It’s Reflections time again!  For those of you new to NSS, Reflections is a National PTA program involving student competition in:

Dance Choreography

Film Production

Literature

Music Composition

Photography

Visual Arts

Each year, students in Grades Pre-K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through Art.  Students submit their artwork to the school PTA for initial judging.  NSS PTA will then submit the first place winning entries for each grade division and arts category to the state office.  The CT PTA will then judge these entries and the winners will be sent to the National PTA for the final round of Judging with the awards announced in May.

This year’s theme is: Within Reach.  Students reflect on this theme and then create original works of art.  This is your child’s chance to express who they are as an individual.  Last years entries will be on display in the school.

Here is the Student entry form, the official rules/guidelines, and the CT PTA Reflections website for further information. The deadline for all entries is Friday, January 12, 2018.

Please contact Christine Voytek at chrismere@yahoo.com for further information or questions.

Holiday Shopping Fundraiser at the Mason Jar
The Mason Jar in Monroe will graciously be hosting a holiday shopping event to benefit the NSS PTA on Thursday, December 7th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Come enjoy wine, cheese, and shopping with friends for a good cause. 20% of all proceeds will be donated to NSS! Find the shop at 266B Main St. in Monroe.

Change of Plan Pads
If a change of plan pad is needed, please send in $3 cash or check payable to NSS PTA, with your child’s name and class. Please allow up to a week to receive a new pad. Thank you!

SCOUTING NEWS

Girl Scouts Collection Drive
Girls Scouts are holding a Play-doh, Crayon, & Gum Drive for Local Children’s Hospitals, December 4th-20th. Donations of small containers of Play-doh, crayons, and packs of chewing gum are needed for distribution at local children’s hospitals. In collaboration with Brady’s Smile, Girl Scout Troop #33221 will help supply hospital-bound children with a few fun items to bring them a smile during their stay. A collection box will be outside the main office for donations. Thank you for your support!

Friday Flash Info
If you have a submission for the Friday Flash, send it to info@nsspta.org no later than 11:00 AM on Thursday.  Please include any attachments as well. When we have a short week, the Flash will go out on the last school day of that week. The deadline for submissions will then be 11:00 AM on the previous day. Also, when sending an email for the Flash, please include no extra formatting, i.e., bold, caps, shading, etc.  For any “community” or non-PTA flyers, please utilize the district’s new system – Peachjar. Peachjar is a website where you can find out about community events and post your own flyers for others to see.
