SCHOOL NEWS

Notes from Mrs. Jackson
Another exciting week at NSS.  We are very proud of our fifth grade students, Ms. Zadravecz, and Mrs. Ficks for presenting a wonderful concert on Wednesday.  Our orchestra students did a lovely job and got us in the holiday spirit. Our chorus students presented many wonderful songs and the last one, “Let It Snow”, gave us a delayed opening on Thursday!  I spent time with students in grade 4 this past week and was very impressed with their reading work as they worked on identifying important versus interesting facts when reading non-fiction.  We are all looking forward to next week and the many exciting events as we get close to our winter vacation.

Safety Reminder
Please make sure to follow our procedures during morning drop off in the loop.  Many parents have shared with us that there is often a delay in drop off due to parents stopping in the middle and getting out of the car to help get their children out of the car from the driver’s side.  This can present serious safety issues for our children and families and becomes difficult for many folks who need to get through the drop off loop quickly.  Please follow the directions of the staff outside as they guide you up as far as possible in the loop.  This helps us with keeping our students safe and gets children into school quickly and parents out quickly.  Our biggest concern in this is the SAFETY of all!  Thanks for helping us with this.

From the Health Office
As the cold and flu season continues, please reinforce the importance of good hygiene with your children. Hand washing is the most important factor in preventing the spread of cold and flu viruses. Please call the absentee line, 203-255-8416, when your child is home ill and indicate what the illness is, i.e. strep throat, bronchitis, croup, pneumonia. I also encourage the flu shot for all students and staff.

Remember that all medications administered at school, including over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol or Advil require a doctor’s order and should be brought to the school nurse by an adult.

If your child is ill, has had surgery, or has an injury requiring a cast or splint, a note from your health care provider is required to excuse your child from P.E.

If you have any questions regarding your child’s health or need to update us on changes in your child’s medical status, please contact me by calling the school.  Best Wishes for a very Happy and Healthy 2018!

PTA NEWS

Reflections

It’s Reflections time again!  For those of you new to NSS, Reflections is a National PTA program involving student competition in:

Dance Choreography

Film Production

Literature

Music Composition

Photography

Visual Arts

Each year, students in Grades Pre-K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through Art. Students submit their artwork to the school PTA for initial judging. NSS PTA will then submit the first place winning entries for each grade division and arts category to the state office. The CT PTA will then judge these entries and the winners will be sent to the National PTA for the final round of Judging with the awards announced in May.

This year’s theme is: Within Reach. Students reflect on this theme and then create original works of art. This is your child’s chance to express who they are as an individual. Last years entries will be on display in the school.

Here is the Student entry form, the official rules/guidelines, and the CT PTA Reflections website for further information. The deadline for all entries is Friday, January 12, 2018.

Please contact Christine Voytek at chrismere@yahoo.com for further information or questions.

Change of Plan Pads
If a change of plan pad is needed, please send in $3 cash or check payable to NSS PTA, with your child’s name and class. Please allow up to a week to receive a new pad. Thank you!
