SCHOOL NEWS

Notes from Mrs. Jackson
We are off to a great start for the 2018-2019 school year.  The weather has not prevented our students from working hard as they adjust to their class routines.  Many thanks for working with us as we experienced the first early dismissal of the school year.  It is especially helpful to have clear dismissal plans every day and we appreciate your understanding when we ask you to do your best to keep dismissal consistent for your children.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you at next week’s Open House.  This is a great time to meet your child’s teacher and learn more about classroom routines and practices. Your children look forward to having you visit their classes.  Please remember this event is for adults only.  Doors open at 6:10 and classroom presentations begin promptly at 6:15 (grades 3, 4, 5) and then again at 7:15 (grades K, 1, 2).  Classroom presentations are approximately 30 minutes and you have some time to stop in and visit the specials classes – art, music, physical education, and library media.  There is time set aside from 7:00-7:15 for you to visit with PTA representatives and Mrs. Jackson in the APR.

OPEN HOUSE SCHEDULE – Thursday, September 13
6:15-7:00 – Grades 3-5 – Classroom Presentations  (Grade 5 – please go to your child’s homeroom class first to meet the homeroom teacher and then you will switch classes to meet with the other member of your child’s teaching team.  The teams are – Mrs. Furey/Mr. Gillen and Mrs. Dushok/Mr. Wendin)
7:00-7:15 – Welcome Back – APR (this is a time for parents to stop in and meet PTA representatives and Mrs. Jackson)
7:15-8:00 – Grades K-2 – Classroom Presentations

STEAM
The Fairfield Public Schools has an exciting new curricular program for all students in grades 3-5 – S(cience)T(echnology)E(ngineering)A(rts)M(athematics) – STEAM.

Students will meet with their STEAM teacher once per six-day cycle to apply problem-solving and inquiry processes to address everyday situations.  We are very excited about this addition to our already rich elementary curricula.

There will be a STEAM information night for parents of students in grades 3, 4 and 5 on October 4, 2018 at 6:00 pm in the Fairfield Warde High School Auditorium. Come see what your children will be experiencing and try out some of our exciting materials. Please see the attached document to learn more.

NSS Library Volunteers Needed!
The NSS library volunteer program is getting underway and we are looking for parents to help throughout the year. No experience is necessary – responsibilities include shelving books, checking books in, and helping students check books out. The time commitment is only what you can give – an hour or so here and there makes a big difference! We will have an orientation meeting in the coming weeks, though you don’t have to attend to be able to volunteer. Please contact Annie Ringelheim if you are interested or have any questions!
