SCHOOL NEWS

Notes from Mrs. Jackson
It has been a very productive and busy time at NSS.  We are enjoying seeing so many parents at conferences and look forward to next week’s as well.  The Book Fair has been a huge success and we love any opportunity for students to gain access to books.  There are many great activities coming up this month so please make sure you keep checking the weekly Flash so you don’t miss out on anything.

Volunteers Needed for Veterans Day Ceremony Preparation
The Veteran’s Day Assembly committee is looking for a few good people! There are many ways to help prior to our assembly on November 9th. We are looking for ONE volunteer to type up the names of veterans for our WALL OF HONOR.  This can be done at home or at school.  We are also looking for a team of volunteers to help put up pictures and decorate the hallway on November 1st or 2nd.  If you are interested and can lend a hand, please email Mrs. Furey.

Please see the attached flyers for more information about our Veteran’s Day Commemoration and Wall of Honor.

NSS Halloween Costume Parade

Back by popular demand, we will be having Officer Mike Guilfoyle of the Fairfield Police Department at our PTA meeting to talk with us about internet safety.  This parent only presentation will focus on how to keep our kids, at any age, safe as they navigate the tech world.  Tips and tools will be shared for the use of all things electronic – phone, tablets, internet and the never-ending string of apps.  Please book your sitters now and be sure to join us for this very informative session.

NSS Tigers Take the PINK PLEDGE!!!
This is the 2nd year that NSS will join the town of Fairfield in supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month. On October 26th we will get crazy with Pink. Each student is asked for a $1 donation and faculty $5 (of course any & all amounts are welcome) to be donated to the Norma Phriem Breast Care Center right here in town to offset the costs for the patients & families in our community.  Plan to dress in your boldest pink outfit to show our support, each class will take a picture with the Pink Pledge car. Let’s do this Tigers & PINK IT UP!!!!  Please send Cash or checks made to NPBCC sent in an envelope marked Pink Pledge to Eileen Dancho c/o Cormac Dancho 5W

COMMUNITY NEWS

IT’S ELECTION TIME – EDUCATION FORUM WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17TH, 6-7PM
The FEA and the Fairfield PTA Council are co-sponsoring an education forum to hear from the eight candidates running to represent Fairfield in the general assembly! This will be held on Wednesday, October 17th from 6-7 pm in the Roger Ludlowe Middle School Auditorium. Education funding, regulations and policies are mostly set at the State level.  Recently, the general assembly has also begun taking up issues of school safety and whether or not public school funds should be diverted to for-profit charter schools. Everything from the common core curriculum that students must study, regulations related to special needs students, state funding of our schools, and even the amount of standardized testing our children are subject to – are decided by State Senators and State Representatives!

Candidates invited to the moderated Q&A forum are (with the incumbent listed first):
28th Senatorial District:  Tony Hwang (R) and Michelle Lapine McCabe (D)
132nd Representative District: Brenda Kupchick (R) and Caitlin Clarkson Pereira (D)
133rd Representative District:  Cristin McCarthy Vahey (D) and Sally Connolly (R)
134th Representative District:  Laura Devlin (R) and Asley Gaudiano (D)

We hope that you will join us for this important and timely opportunity to learn each candidate’s views on education and how he or she will work to support our schools. This event is open to the public.

NSS Flash Info
If you have a submission for the NSS Friday Flash, send it to info@nsspta.org no later than 1:00pm on Wednesdays. Please include the text of your blurb (plain text, no special formatting) and any attachments in PDF format. When we have a short week, the Flash will go out on the last school day of that week. The deadline for submissions will then be 1:00pm on the previous day. For any “community” or non-PTA flyers, please utilize the district’s new system – Peachjar. Peachjar is a website where you can find out about community events and post your own flyers for others to see.
